There once was a young man named Ryan. He took great pleasure telling stories and was captivated by the emotional connection achieved through words. In 1999 he was accepted in to the creative writing department at the University of Victoria. Ryan couldn't wait until class started...
Not long after, Ryan found a most unusual website. Somehow this site was able to produce sound and animations and vocal tracks almost instantly even though Ryan used a lowly 14.4 modem. He had never seen anything like this. He later learned this site was made with something called Flash and knew then how he could best use his passion for relaying ideas. The creative writing department would have to wait.
Web Design
Douglas Magazine
Contracted by Page One Publishing to update the layout and functionality of an existing site based on a pdf mockup provided by their in-house design team.
St. Michaels University School Archives
Worked with the TM New Media team to develop a feature-rich media archive for SMUS. Built a demo version of a visitor controlled online video editor.
Port22 Consulting
www.port22.ca (not yet live)
This website was made for a local provider of networking solutions. The colours and imagery were chosen to highlight the westcoast lifestyle while playing off their company name.
Built on a WordPress backend to allow the client to control and update their own content, this contract included all site theming and development along with logo and branding creation.
Fisheye Photography
www.fisheyephoto.net
This is a rebrand of a site I made many years back. The goal was to make the overall theme more current while increasing the image size and focus. Due to the large image dimensions and use of Flash I included a separate 'business card' page for mobile devices.
The site uses PHP, XML and Actionscript to control the display of the images and is entirely hand-coded. Included is a simple Wordpress blog.
SchoolWAX TV
www.schoolwaxtv.com
This was an internal project of Etraffic Solutions, extending the qualities of another site, SchoolWAX.
I was tasked with transferring the existing theme and developing a vetted video sharing site to be used primarily for educational material. This was my first use of Drupal and a new direction for the company, but I was confident that it could be done.
Ultimately, what I ended up with was a full blown video sharing site complete with ratable, socially sharable content and a custom Flash video player which was configurable in the back end of Drupal.
A Facebook app was started which does allow for the searching and playing of videos from SchoolWAX TV on Facebook, but sadly more pressing work came in and this feature was put on a permanent hiatus.
Let's Discover French
DVD Version
This site was made while employed at Etraffic Solutions and was used for a DVD version of our "Let's Discover French" series. The green header was based on existing print material and the rest of the site was designed to compliment that branding.
Etraffic Press
This site was made while employed at Etraffic Solutions. The Etraffic Press site was intended to spotlight key events within our product line while providing a simple marketing site to relay an overview of each product. I was provided with the freedom to work out a style and concept on my own.
I chose to mimic a newspaper style, melding the digital nature of our products with the traditional perception of learning coming in the form of print material.
I utilized Flash to create the weather widget and the current date found on the top of the page along with the sifr javascript library to display a custom font for the headlines.
Flash Applications
World Bank - Cities and Climate Change Leadership Series
Over 160 Flash-based, narrative-driven animations ranging from one to three minutes in length were produced while contracted with TM New Media for the World Bank. I worked with their in-house design team in creating a consistent theme across the lessons and worked independently on over 90 lessons myself.
Along with the lessons development, I created the web-based framework to house the lessons, produced an xml driven, flash quizzing system and created a set of advanced interface widgets to streamline the process of creating lessons for the TM print-based designers.
Ministry of Environment
Green Me - Green BC
view a demo version
This application was developed as an internal project for the Ministry of Environment while with Etraffic Solutions. We were tasked to develop a captivating interface for an interactive, multiple choice quiz. The result was an emersive digital board game.
The application was connected to a database where teams of players could follow a leader board. Administrators were able to add, remove or modify the questions through a back end page which was then fed to the interactive through XML.
I led this project, pooling resources, delegating tasks and meeting weekly with the clients. I was responsible for the concept, splicing and animating the backgrounds, all actionscript coding and sound creation. The illustrations and walk cycles were created by other skilled designers and based on my requirements.
BCed Online
Technology Questionnaire
view a demo version
This project was designed as a very general computer preparation tool for high school students. The questionnaire was meant to appeal to younger people while maintaining the corporate identity of the client.
The content is populated by XML and upon completion of the quiz, there is an option to print the results which dynamically attaches a custom header to each printed page.
This was created while working for Etraffic Solutions.
